Self portraits/ First shoot

During this session I had a refresher on basic camera and lighting skills as well as things to consider about capturing a still image. For example, to be understand what background or what angle you want to shoot at and what does it implicate. A background can portray many things to the audience and make them think why it is there and why is it significant. Also focusing on the models behaviour/ how they look on camera, is it real, is there behaviour a performance or are they relaxed. Performance can be acknowledged as a deception. What is the subject within the still image trying to portray. Plus, to also consider the lighting – or the exposure triangle. These are all things I have to consider in my final three images. My initial ideas which I have created a mind map on another post. Was that to focus on making a simple studio portrait into a more interesting portrait, wether I used props and lighting or post production. During the first shoot my group and I took a few pictures as majority of the time we were focusing on setting up and learning about the equipment. It was quite challenging at first as even though the equipment is acknowledged as basic there was a lot to consider, such as safety and how to use them properly.

Here are some images taken from the afternoon

We learnt that from this image we were satisfied with the lighting as the exposure was not too bright and the overall image was well balanced.
However, I noticed that these pictures were over exposed, and therefore knew I wouldn’t be using these. What I found difficult from this session is that there are multiple things you have to do at the same time. For example there should always be two people setting up or carrying lights or tripods. Ensure wires are not a trip hazard. Every time the model moves you have to make sure the brightness of the flash and the camera are connected to the power and it is at a level you want.
